Meet the Traffic Dummies: Attention and Driver Assistance Go Hand in Hand
There is always one common denominator in life-threatening situations on and off the road: attention. And that is exactly the focal point of We Love Cycling’s latest campaign – Traffic Dummies.
As the name suggests, it features the most unfortunate stuntmen and stunt-women of all. But despite the crash test dummies’ unflattering name, their services are priceless for the further development of safety measures. And because we hate to see human beings taking over their job and getting hurt, we have once more turned our attention to traffic relations, collision prevention and, well, attention itself.

This new content series follows the Safety campaign Škoda launched in 2018 and both projects carry the umbrella motto of ‘Stay on the Safe Side’. Unlike the previous videos, which used a fearless stuntman to deliver bone-chilling replications of mild to serious bicycle collisions in an urban environment, the Traffic Dummies initiative uses a more light-hearted, hyperbolic and colourful approach while still addressing risky and absent-minded behaviour. Since We Love Cycling is the main offshoot of Škoda’s genuine interest in cycling, one of our key values has always been cultivating excellent relationships among traffic participants, especially cyclists and motorists. With the increasing numbers of multiple means of transport everywhere, it’s crucial to develop and maintain practical safety habits, tune into the rhythm of other road users and, most importantly, mind your surroundings.
Lately, the scourge of multitasking has been spreading both on the bike and behind the wheel, including but not limited to: making and taking phone calls, eating and drinking, rummaging in one’s bag, petting a dog, admiring the landscape, replying to instant messages, picking one’s teeth, and much more. The distractions are omnipresent and abundant, and more seductive than ever, with the rapid development of communication technologies. Cyclists are also carrying more than ever on their rides, using their bikes to haul various cargo and even kids, as a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle is being promoted world-wide.

We have simulated the outcomes and the surprising power of real-life impact crashes that might occur when an unsuspecting cyclist (a dummy, in this case) going at their usual speed meets an obstacle front-wheel first. And it’s as intense as you would guess.
In the video above, three other short clips and a series of articles, we will shed light on the most common occurrences in urban and outdoor cycling environments related to attention – and a lack thereof. We will present cycling techniques, habits and state-of-the-art cycling gear as well as cycling-friendly Škoda driver assistance systems that make coexisting and sharing the road much more enjoyable for all involved. And we are going to teach you how to train your alertness to identify potentially dangerous situations, factor fatigue into your decision-making processes and avoid accidents by conscious prevention.
The underlying point of the Traffic Dummies initiative still stands, though: there is no miracle advice or equipment. You have to keep your eyes peeled and mind well rested, no matter whether you’re on a bike or in a car with driving assistants. Even high-quality cycling and protective gear means nothing without a responsible rider.

We’re sure no one wants to end up like our poor plastic pals in the video, so the only thing left to say is: pay attention, stick with us for the rest of the Traffic Dummies journey and stay on the safe side!
