Marta Cavalli’s attack

The former Italian champion emerged from the leading group of eight riders and rode solo for the final 1.8 km to win it by four seconds in the end. Cavalli timed the attack perfectly and left the likes of van Vleuten (Movistar) and Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) behind. Demi Vollering (SD Worx) finished second for the second time in a row. Liane Lippert (DSM) crossed the line as third.

Kwiatkowski’s photo finish
The men’s race was even more dramatic with a photo finish needed to decide that Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) won the Amstel Gold Race for the second time. He beat Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën Team) on the line by just a few inches but the win was initially given to Cosnefroy before the photo finish revealed the truth. The duo attacked with 20 km to go and no one was able to respond. Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma) ended up taking the last spot on the podium.
“A lot of luck I would say, it was very tough,” Kwiatkowski said. “Tough finish, tough sprint. I was super confident I could win but, at the same time, the last 50 m were super tough. Cosnefroy still accelerated when I was beside him, and for me, it was all about the win. Knowing Tom was in the front group, it was all about winning the race. I was only there to win the race.”
