“The two races that always made me dream were the World Championships and the Tour de France. Of course, I want to win Monuments and Classics but if I could only pick one, it would be the Tour,“ he said on Eurosport France’s Bistrot Vélo.
Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) claimed he had targeted the World Championships above all else, and now that he has the rainbow stripes on his jersey, he can focus on other things. Sadly, it looks like it won’t be the Tour next year. Despite the fact that when he does try, it’s always a great show. Alaphilippe finished fifth in the 2019 Tour. He was in the lead for most of the race but ultimately lost to Bernal in the last few days, claiming the hearts of many fans in the process. In 2020 he took stage two and the yellow jersey. It looked like he was at it again but then lost the lead through a penalty and finished 36th overall in the end.
“The route of the 2021 Tour is nice, and it motivates me. With the opening stages that suit me quite well. But for the moment, I’m only thinking about preparing for the start of the season and the Tour always comes a bit afterwards.”
We certainly expect him to do great things at the 2021 classics, but another go at the Tour? That would be something, don’t you agree? It is his dream after all…
