The Slovenian rider launched a powerful seated attack with 700 metres to go leaving everyone behind. He took the yellow jersey from his teammate, Wout van Aert and is leading the GC by 12 seconds.
At that moment, the event was all but over as far as the fans were concerned. However, the weather decided to come and play as well. The heavens opened up and hailstorms rained down upon the fans and riders alike. Fans rushed for cover and Egan Bernal had to be escorted off a collapsing podium.
