Van der Poel wins at cyclocross again
The Dutchman is set to defend his rainbow jersey early next year. In the first cyclocross race since his breakthrough in road racing, he won with 23 seconds to spare. Unfortunately, his main rival Van Aert was missing at the Telenet Superprestige Ruddervoorde due to the injury he sustained at the Tour de France.
“Personally, I think it’s a shame that Van Aert is not there because he has always been my biggest competitor,” Van der Poel said. “But maybe I’ll find a challenge in Eli Iserbyt now. It seems that he has taken a big step up.”
The two-time world cyclocross champion won the Amstel Gold Race as well as the Tour of Britain this year. And it was hinted that he will start the Vuelta next year, his first-ever Grand Tour. With the first three stages happening in the Netherlands, it should be interesting indeed.
“I like new challenges. Riding in a Grand Tour could indeed be the next challenge,” Van der Poel admitted in an interview for Algemeen Dagblad.
