“I’m really proud that London will be holding its biggest Car-Free Day celebrations on Sunday and I encourage everyone to join in the fun. We will inspire them (Londoners) to walk and cycle as part of their daily routine,” said the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
Fifteen boroughs including Hackney, Hammersmith or Fulham are running their own smaller events, enabling the citizens to cycle in the safest way possible.
“We are delighted to be playing our part in the biggest ever Car-Free Day celebration in London and in helping people explore central London in a new way. There will be something for everyone and it will showcase all the things London has to offer, all accessible by walking, cycling, and public transport,” explained Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for Environment.
There will be an opportunity to try a range of custom-designed bicycles by Bikeworks including wheelchair bikes, handbikes, tricycles or a recumbent rickcycle, which can carry up to three people. People will then have the opportunity to express their commitment to cycling and walking more on a pledge wall near Bank Junction. Free Thames water refill points will be made available across the event to help protect the planet from pointless plastic waste.
Roads in the City of London and some roads in Southwark (including Tooley Street) will be closed to car traffic from 7 AM and will reopen at 7 PM. London Bridge and Tower Bridge will also be closed to all motorised traffic from 7 AM to 7 PM.
