90-year-old tested positive
Carl Grove won the 90-94 age group individual pursuit and set a new world record of 3:06:12 on July 11 last year. However, the pensioner’s triumph at the Masters Track National Championships has been somewhat shadowed by him testing positive for epitrenbolone. This metabolite of the steroid trenbolone is prohibited, and caused a confusion among the officials. The substance was found in an in-competition urine sample, but Grove had tested negative the day prior. It was established that the problem was most likely caused by contaminated meat, which the gentleman ate the day before the competition.
The Anti-Doping Agency also found that one of the supplements Grove used was contaminated with clomiphene. This drug, used to treat fertility problems, is also prohibited by the WADA. Since the rider tested positive in-competition, his results were annulled and he was disqualified. However, he was only given a public warning and is already preparing for next year. Fingers crossed, sir!
