Adrien Costa Back in the Saddle Three Months After Leg Amputation

By Monica Buck

The former Hagens Berman Axeon pro lost his leg following a mountaineering accident back in August. A boulder fell on his leg, and there was nothing the doctors could do. He wouldn’t, however, let that dampen his spirits and is already back out there.

I’ve always been impressed by this guy, but in the past couple months I’ve found a new level of admiration. @costadrien you’re a slayer, Christopher Blevins, Costas former teammate, wrote on Instagram. He posted two photos to go with the writing. As youd expect with Costa, hes on a bike in one of them and on a climbing wall in the other.

The former pro was taking a break from his promising cycling career at the time of the accident. Following the death of his teammate Chad Young at the 2017 Tour of the Gila, Costa needed to think on his way of life. At the beginning of the year, he decided not to race in 2018 at all. However, the cycling community did not forget about him.

A crowdfunding page was set up by Hagens Berman Axeon in August. They wanted to help Costa with the rehabilitation, and the response from the public was overwhelming. Over 128,000 USD have been raised so far. A number far exceeding the original goal, which had to be changed a couple of times in the process.

Actually, the donations are still coming in. So if you want to help Costa with the transition period, you can do so on his gofundme page.
