VIDEO: Watch a Police Officer Chase Down a Bike Thief in a Cycling Pursuit

By Monica Buck

Jim Sadler, who works for the Derbyshire Constabulary, tried to question a man near a train station in Derby on August 23. The suspect was happy to hand over a heavy bag containing bolt cutters, and then pedalled away. Fast. The officer quickly responded and pursued the thief on his bicycle until he was able to catch up with him on an incline. At that moment, another officer closed in from the opposite direction, and the criminal finally gave up.

“We have released dramatic footage of the moment a Derby man was chased and arrested for going equipped to steal bikes from Pride Park. The subsequent chase through the cycle lanes towards the city centre was caught on PCSO Sadler’s body worn video. Jim was able to give a commentary to his colleagues and shortly after, Mr Liddle was arrested. The bag he handed over to Jim was found to contain bolt-croppers,” read the police statement.

The video has proved quite popular, getting over 120,000 views on Facebook to date.

The thief in question, Scott Liddle, 37, was given a suspended prison sentence of 18 weeks. Unfortunately, he went on stealing bikes and was caught again earlier this month. This time he went to jail immediately. He’s in for 36 weeks and was given a Criminal Behaviour Order to keep away from certain parts of the city.
