Simon Yates extends his lead
The Michelton-Scott rider went into yesterday’s stage with 1:24 lead over Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb). And he needed just two attacks to shake off all the chasers on the final categorised climb of the day. He now has a comfortable lead of 2:11 over Dumoulin, heading to the crucial time trial on Tuesday. Chris Froome (Team Sky) failed to follow up on his stunning Monte Zoncolan win on Saturday and dropped to seventh place overall.
“I don’t know if it’s enough,” Yates said of his advantage. “I wish I did know because I’d be a bit calmer. I’ve been trying to take time since the race started, and I’ve been very successful on many days, but my advantage can be wiped out in one day, in one TT.”
