Chris Froome going for a Grand Tour double
The four-time Tour de France winner has confirmed he will ride the 2018 Giro d’Italia and try to become the first rider in 20 years to win both the Tour de France and the Italian Grand Tour. He could also become the first rider since 1982 to hold all three Grand Tours at the same time, as he is the reigning Vuelta champion.
The route seems to be suited to Froome’s skills, as there are two TTs totalling more than 40 km.
“It’s a unique situation for me, having won the Tour and Vuelta and now having the opportunity to go to the Giro and attempt to win a third consecutive Grand Tour. It’s really exciting to be able to take on a new challenge, to do something that perhaps people wouldn’t expect and to mix it up. It’s a whole new motivation for me to see if I can pull off something special next year,” Froome said in a statement.
