Dispute in Bédoin
The Provencal village serving as a gateway to the ascent of Mont Ventoux is facing a difficult decision. A cycling complex is planned to be built there, and while some locals welcome the possibility of increased tourism, others are wary of the consequences the decision might bring.
Locals packed the village hall during a council meeting last month, waiting to hear details about the ambitious project. The whole complex would occupy a 30,000 m2 site currently used for agriculture. The velodrome inside a cyclists-focused shopping centre would have a 250-metre track and a capacity of 3,000 spectators. That’s the equivalent of the whole village. Plus a luxury hotel would be built providing 100 rooms, a fine dining restaurant and a brasserie.
The project sounds great to any cyclist’s ears, but the opponents are not convinced. They are afraid that the project would actually destroy the relationship between the village and cycling. And that the mass-scale tourism might spoil the small village’s charm. That’s why the opposition is calling for a referendum.
What do you think about such a project? Would you like to go there for a visit?
Did he get it?!
