“The Vuelta is a race I love racing. It’s a vicious race but it’s three weeks that I enjoy. I’ve come second three times now and I’d love to win the Vuelta. To win the Tour and the Vuelta in one year would be absolutely incredible. I’ve got that opportunity now and I’m certainly going to go for it.”
The elusive Spanish Grand Tour starts on August 19.
“I think physically he can definitely keep on going. Then it’s a question of mentality really, hunger and desire, and the willingness to work and put in the hours. Of course it’s a very difficult sport in terms of managing your weight and constantly having to look after that side of life,” said Team Sky manager, Sir Dave Brailsford.
He seems to be confident that his team can get another victory, though. “There’s no reason why not. We’ve got four weeks to the start of the Vuelta. We’ve got a couple of races in between but we’ll dust ourselves down a little bit and go and do it all over again!”
