Avoid carbs-only breakfasts
Almost all of us have been conditioned to pretty much start the day with a sugar bomb. Things like toast with jam, cereal with milk, some type of wheat-pancake drowned in syrup, and a sweetened beverage are all too common. And those are the supposedly healthy choices. Think of all those last minute in-a-hurry bagels, donuts, croissants, and scones. It’s all a giant carb-fest, and everyone is invited.
This is not to say carbs are bad or something to avoid at all costs. When it comes to breakfast, it’s actually not a bad time to have some. After a night’s sleep, your muscle’s glycogen reserves are almost empty and a lot of the carbs you’ll consume will go to replenish them. It’s just a reminder that carbs are usually the easiest to over-eat, not very nutrient dense, and provoke the biggest insulin response. So, think of carbs as just one small part of your breakfast that should be complemented with sources of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and even healthy fats.
