How to Celebrate Christmas Without Eating

By Jiří Kaloč

In an ideal world we wouldn’t have to use excuses like “I’ll just take it home for later” when we’re really just going to throw it away, or “I already ate” when you simply don’t eat what’s being offered to you again and again. Keeping a healthy weight is important and holidays are the hardest time to manage that. But did you know there is a foolproof way of not gaining weight over the holidays? Just celebrate it without eating!

How do you do that?

We often use food as something to occupy our hands or as the main event. It doesn’t have to be that way! If you plan in advance, you can structure an evening so that food is not important. You can even ask guests not to bring food or alcohol and remind them to eat beforehand or afterward. Choose a fun activity and make that the focus of the celebration. You might even bring your group of friends or family closer together by doing something new and fun instead of just sitting, talking, and eating. Here are some ideas.

Go on an adventurous snowy bike ride / hike

Spending time outside moving is always a good idea, even more so during the stressful holiday time. Get your group of cycling enthusiasts together and go for a snowy bike ride, it will be adventurous, you’ll forget about your “to do” list, and food will definitely not be on your mind. Another good choice is hiking – when there’s snow on the ground, you can see animal tracks easily and familiar places will look differently dressed in white. And you can make picking up a Christmas tree your quest too and turn a chore into a fun day out.

Go ice skating

Ice skating is a great activity for any type of group. It will fit nicely into a romantic evening, family time, or just fun evening out with your friends. It doesn’t matter how good you are, everyone will have a big smile on their face when navigating on the slippery surface. And if you’re lucky, there might even be a Christmas-themed skate night with lights and caroling.

Decorate together

Some people enjoy decorating the house and the Christmas tree, others consider it a chore. One thing is for sure, it’s better to do it while chatting with people you like. You can add some board or card games to that and you’re set for a fun evening. It’s a great way to occupy your hands so you don’t feel the need to snack.

Go out

Go caroling, go to a performance, or simply go see a movie. Holidays will be packed with interesting events in your area, check them out, you might be surprised what you find. Just a side note, wine and cheese tasting sessions is not what I had in mind.
