I had no words when I saw that. A lot of the other riders saw the crash and they are all shocked. They came back to the hotel and you can imagine how shocked they all were,” Iwan Spekenbrink told the cyclingnews.com.
American rider Chad Haga, who was one of the seriously injured guys airlifted to the hospital, showed admirable sense of humour, when he turned to Twitter to say: “”Weight loss technique for the ill-advised: smash your face on a car, you won’t eat for days.”
John Degenkolb, Warren Barguil, Fredrik Ludvigsson, Ramon Sinkeldam and Max Walscheid were also part of the accident which is already being investigated by the police. The 73-year-old driver was charged with reckless driving and was released from the custody in the meantime.
“Perhaps it was a moment of forgetfulness and she was driving on the side of the road she’s used to. But here we drive on the other side of the road and this kind of carelessness almost resulted in lives being lost,” told a source close to the investigation Spanish daily AS.
It is not yet known what sentence might be the British woman facing.
