Top cycling destinations to beat those winter blues
The Irish cycling season has sadly come to an end. We’re now waking up to dark mornings, and that stretch in the evenings sure feels like it’s dwindling more and more each day.
But, fear not! If you’re lucky enough to have some annual leave leftover, a winter-sun getaway could be for you. We’ve done the research and have compiled a list of the best cycling hotspots not too far from our shores…
Monchique, Portugal.
Home to some of Europe’s most spectacular climbs, Monchique is a cyclist’s playground! Its cycling appeal means that numerous hotels in the area are tailored to perfectly accommodate large groups. Don’t forget to check out Cabo de Sao Vicente, Europe’s westerly point, while you’re there. You won’t regret those impressive views over the Atlantic as you whizz by.
Dolomites, Italy.
One of the most beautiful parts of Europe to explore on two wheels; Italy’s Dolomites region is a popular year-round destination for avid cyclists. With plenty of uphill terrain, this could be a nice challenge for those looking to improve their climbing capabilities. Plus, think of the incredible little eateries you could stop off in en route!
Lanzarote, Canary Islands.
Guaranteeing sun almost all year round, this volcanic island is a sun-loving cyclist’s dream! The terrain is mixed, with flat stretches and sweeping climbs and descents. Lanzarote is also a surfing paradise which means it can be extremely windy. That might not be every cyclist’s ideal, but for those who don’t mind cycling in the wind, a surfing lesson could also be on the cards!
Girona, Spain.
Europe’s cycling Mecca is home to many pro-riders, making it an ideal spot for a cycling getaway. It’s got undulating country lanes, testing climbs and technical descents. Pair those with warm weather, some of the finest Spanish cuisine and the fascinating culture – and what more could you want?
Andorra
Previously deemed cycling’s best-kept secret, Andorra is a road cycling utopia! Its spectacular mountain passes make it great for those who are looking to train at altitude. And once you’ve hung up your cycle shorts for the day, you can relax in front of some of the most breathtaking mountain views around!
